NATURAL PARKS AND RESERVES OF CECINA VALLEY (VAL DI CECINA)
The high Cecina Valley territory, to demonstrate its high naturalistic and historical values, is home to 3 major important protected areas. It consists of the "Berignone Forest", "Monterufoli-Caselli Forest" and "Montenero" natural reserves, extending over an area of around 7,100
hectares, with direct land management of the community of Montana Alta Val di Cecina. The
management, directed by way of a forestry management program and appropriated regulations, is finalized with the sustainable use of the territory and the
evaluation of the numerous natural and cultural resources, along with the participation of local communities.
GENERAL DESCRIPTION
To cross the territory of the reserve means to immerse one's self in a vast forest
landscape, where the latifoglie woods, the wild Mediterranean bush, rarely interrupted by
traditional farming and cultivation, they make up the many diverse hillside
compositions. In this continual natural context one can easily recognize fluvial branches of the Cecina River and numerous streams like Sellate and Fosci. Pebble lined water terraces, ravines and windy creeks, form eroded pathways... all
characteristic of the deep valley landscape, rich in an important
naturalistic and historical patrimony.
